Hydro at COP30: Joining the dialogue for a just and low-carbon transition

As COP30 brings global attention to climate action and the Amazon, aluminium and renewable energy company Hydro will contribute to the global discussion by combining more than a century of industrial experience with long standing operations in the region.

The 2025 UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) will take place in the Brazilian city of Belém, in the state of Pará, a region that was chosen for reflecting both the challenges and opportunities of the global green transition. Hydro is the largest industrial player in Pará, employing more than 6,000 people across mining, refining and smelting operations.

Hydro develops natural resources into products and solutions that support viable societies. With over 100 years of experience, we are working to decarbonize the aluminium industry, invest in renewable energy and advance the circular economy. Our goal is to reduce our emissions by 30 percent by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050.

COP30 in the Amazon is a unique opportunity to demonstrate how responsible mining and metal production can contribute to the green and just transition.”
Bjørn Kjetil Mauritzen,   Senior Vice President of Group Sustainability

Our approach unites global efforts to decarbonize aluminium production with targeted initiatives that empower communities and build local resilience. At COP30, we will share experiences from our operations in the Amazon, highlighting how we are reducing emissions, advancing renewable energy, improving environmental practices and driving social development in the regions where we operate.

COP30 brings spotlight to the Amazon

As COP30 turns the world's attention to the Amazon, Hydro brings decades of experience producing alumina and aluminium in Pará, showing how responsible mining can support the green transition.

Our participation reflects a commitment to transparency and collaboration, and we look forward to engaging with partners, policymakers and civil society to explore how industry can contribute to more sustainable solutions.

Hydro's operations in the Brazilian Amazon

Hydro operates an integrated value chain in the state of Pará, from bauxite mining in Paragominas to alumina refining at Hydro Alunorte and aluminium smelting at Albras. Hydro is the largest industry player in the region, with more than 6,000 employees in Barcarena and in Paragominas.

Over the past seven years, Hydro has invested more than BRL 260 million (approximately EUR 47 million) in social and environmental programs in the region. A key outcome is the Peace House (TerPaz) project, with three units completed and three more under construction to support vulnerable communities.

Hydro’s decarbonization efforts

Hydro is leading the aluminium industry's transition to a carbon neutral future by scaling renewable energy, increasing recycling and developing emission free smelting technology to achieve net-zero production by 2050.  Since 1990, we have cut emissions from our Norwegian smelters by more than 50 percent, while increasing production by 40 percent. By 2030, we will cut our total carbon emissions by 30 percent compared to a 2018 baseline.

Our aluminium products carry carbon footprints about one-fourth that of the industry’s average, and our leading recycled aluminium product, Hydro CIRCAL 100R carries less than 0.5 kg CO2e per kilogram of aluminium.

Hydro hosted events at COP30

As part of our participation in COP30, Hydro will host and co-host a series of events that bring together partners, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss key topics related to climate, industry, and sustainable development. These sessions reflect our commitment to open dialogue.

November 10 from 17:00 to 18:00 (Ground floor of the Creative Economy Pavilion, Green Zone), Unveil of the Peace Bench: Unveil of the Peace Bench, a symbol of dialogue made with Hydro aluminium, gifted from Nobel Peace Center COP30

November 11 from 11:30 – 12:30 (Norwegian pavilion, Blue Zone), Real Business: Sabotaging the shift - How disinformation derails climate action and a just transition: A dialogue to explore how AI-powered disinformation and selective data distort climate narratives, obscure the realities of resource extraction, and threaten the integrity of a just and transparent green transition.

November 12 from 16:30-17:15 (Norwegian pavilion, Blue Zone), Shaping the market for low-carbon products: What does it take?: A dialogue on how to create a market for low-carbon products to ensure a both sustainable and profitable green transition

November 13 from 10:30 – 12:30 (Norwegian pavilion, Blue Zone),  No time to waste – A dialogue on circularity: A dialogue on the importance of ramping up investments in a global circular economy while tackling the potential hurdles that come with it.
